Between Us
Between Us is a safe and educational app designed to support young people aged 10 to 18 who struggle to access reliable information about their body, emotions, relationships, and health. Our research with 100 young people showed that only 12% believe they have easy access to trustworthy information, while 88% feel there is a lack of safe spaces to ask questions. 83% reported feeling ashamed or insecure when discussing these topics. To address this, we created an age-adapted platform with structured learning content and an anonymous chatbot, providing a safe, accessible, and reliable space to learn and make informed decisions.

Through Between Us, the team enhanced its technical knowledge in programming while deepening its understanding of a topic that directly concerns us: sexual education. Learning to address a sensitive subject with a young audience was a key outcome, broadening our awareness of the importance of approaching delicate issues with sensitivity, responsibility, and respect.
However, we faced challenges throughout the journey, including time management while balancing other responsibilities, aligning the team members’ schedules, and solving problems during development. Nevertheless, with the support of mentors, along with patience and dedication to research, the team successfully overcame these obstacles.
Information Legitimacy Description
To ensure our information was reliable, we used trusted global sources such as World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, and national health institutions. We cross-checked all content with these references and adapted it to be age-appropriate and easy to understand. Since we used AI tools to build parts of the app, we carefully reviewed all AI-generated outputs to avoid inaccuracies or unsafe responses. We tested the chatbot with different types of questions to ensure it provided safe, educational, and responsible answers. This validation process helped us guarantee that our app delivers accurate, trustworthy, and user-appropriate information.

Ethical considerations were central to the development of Between Us, given the sensitivity of the topic and the young target audience.
To ensure data privacy, the app does not collect personal information and allows anonymous use. Chatbot conversations are not stored, minimizing data exposure. To ensure reliability, all content was based on trusted sources such as the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, and UNESCO, and adapted to be age-appropriate.
To prevent harm, the chatbot follows safety rules to avoid explicit or risky responses, always providing educational and supportive guidance. The app also includes disclaimers that it does not replace professional medical advice. Accessibility was addressed through simple, clear language tailored to young users. Bias was minimized through inclusive and non-judgmental content.
Additionally, the app was designed to be lightweight and efficient, reducing unnecessary data and energy consumption.
These decisions ensure a safe, responsible, and trustworthy user experience.
