GreenUp
GreenUp
In our community, many young people want to help the planet but don’t know where to start. Waste, pollution, a lack of environmental education, and bad habits make things even harder. Our solution is called GreenUp. It’s an app that offers easy-to-complete eco-friendly challenges, such as recycling, conserving water, choosing greener transportation, or protecting the nature around us. Each challenge earns points, and users can watch their total grow over time. These features make environmentalism more fun, more tangible, and above all, more accessible to young people.

Learning Journey
Learning Journey
We learned that we need to be very careful both in our planning and with the app itself, since we had been in a rush and a few months weren’t enough for us—especially on the day of the project submission, which is one of the most challenging parts. As a result, we were able to continue working on the submission thanks to AI, which was very helpful for coding the app. The app had some structures that were too complex to code using the “Blocks” in MIT App Inventor—the software we used to create our app—which helped us make progress on the project.
Ethics
To ensure everyone’s safety, we designed GreenUp without any sensitive personal data: no location tracking, no email addresses, and no private information. Users simply choose a username and password, and the app displays a clear message if the account doesn’t exist. The challenges are designed for children ages 8 to 16, so there is no dangerous or inappropriate content.
To protect the planet, we’ve created simple, achievable challenges that encourage real eco-friendly actions: reducing waste, conserving water and energy, promoting sustainable transportation, and protecting biodiversity. GreenUp motivates without ever encouraging overconsumption.
