LibraTech

LibraTech is a mobile app created by Maria Eduarda, Amanda, Jamily and Emily in partnership with the Meninas Digitais UTFPR-CP project. It aims to improve communication for people with hearing disabilities and mute by translating between written text and Brazilian Sign Language (Libras). The idea came from research and real-life experiences, highlighting the need for more accessible communication tools. LibraTech was designed to support inclusion and reduce communication barriers in everyday situations.

Learning Journey

Our learning journey was full of discoveries. We learned to use block programming platforms like MIT App Inventor and Thunkable. We also improved our teamwork and communication skills. One challenge we faced was switching platforms: we started with Thunkable, but due to some limitations, we decided to migrate to MIT App Inventor. This required us to quickly adapt and learn a new tool. Another challenge was reaching a consensus on the project idea, which required several discussions, but helped us grow as a team.
To build our app, we relied on the support of our mentors, free tutorials from YouTube and Google, as well as examples from the platforms themselves to understand how to structure the design and code.
Although we didn’t study or use artificial intelligence in the current version of the app, we understand its potential to expand accessibility. In future versions, we plan to include AI for sign recognition in photos and videos, a feature that is already part of our roadmap.
Each step of the project helped us evolve as a team, overcome challenges and learn together, and we are proud of what we have achieved along this journey.
