OrbitLess
OrbitLess
Teenagers in Quebec, from 13 to 17 years old, struggle with social media addiction. Powerful algorithms trap teens into endless hours of scrolling, resulting in a chain reaction of negativity in their lives. This issue affects our generation and threatens those to come. OrbitLess is a modern solution that allows teens to replace these unhealthy habits with healthy ones. Unlike existing solutions, OrbitLess offers a bank of customized challenges based on a user’s interests, encouraging them to substitute their screen time for stimulating activities. OrbitLess encourages teens to build identities beyond what exists on their screens, exploring their passions.

Learning Journey
Building OrbitLess taught us the ins and outs of business, of teamwork, and of diligent planning. As we moved through this process, struggling with consistent team meetings and seemingly stagnant progress, we learned how to navigate each other’s schedules. We were able to build a connection that will last us beyond Technovation. Evidently, we cannot deny the challenges stemming from the whole programming process. As total beginners, we learned how build an entire app with zero previous experience. We struggled with incorporating features, like our custom challenge bank, but we overcame this thanks to professional guidance, and many work sessions.
Information Legitimacy Description
Our baseline research that launched us into OrbitLess was executed in two ways: traditional web research and surveys. At the beginning of this project, we collected information on teenagers' screen habits across Canada. We researched how many students are affected by excessive screen time, and the impacts on their lifestyle. All of our data was acquired from certified websites publishing studies from professionals in the field. Our survey was created by our team and was released by our team. At first, we had other students from our secondary school answer, then expanded to more local teens using our social media.

When building OrbitLess, it was important for us to keep in mind our target users were only teenagers. Therefore, we had to remember it would be hard for them to buy new features. Since, before all, we prioritize our users’ health, we decided to waive a monthly subscription price, and instead acquire our revenue using partnerships with schools, that would then pay a discounted fee, keeping OrbitLess free for teens. Additionally, our objective is to help these students improve their quality of life with our healthy habits. This includes cognitive intelligence, so we chose to not include any AI features in our app. We encourage the users to use their minds to their full capacity, so we do the same. By practicing what we preach, we used minimal artificial intelligence to accelerate our coding process. We always practice what we preach.
