SafeRoute

SafeRoute is a mobile application designed to help people travel more safely in their daily lives. Unlike traditional navigation apps that prioritize speed, it suggests safer routes based on factors such as street lighting, time of day, incident data, and community input. The project addresses a real need, as many people especially women and young individuals avoid certain routes due to fear of violence. The app allows users to compare routes by safety level and provides real-time alerts. Aligned with SDG 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities, SafeRoute promotes safer, more accessible, and more conscious urban mobility.

Learning Journey

Learning Journey

Our team developed collaboration, organization, and critical thinking skills through in-person meetings and online sessions with our mentor. We met face-to-face to plan the project, organize ideas, and produce videos, while virtual meetings ensured continuous guidance and feedback. The problem was identified based on real-life situations, making the solution more relevant. Among the challenges, we highlight organizing ideas and transforming personal experiences into a structured proposal. We overcame these challenges through research, validation with our mentor, and teamwork, strengthening both our technical and communication skills.

Information Legitimacy Description

To ensure the legitimacy of the information, we started from real-life experiences faced by people in their daily lives, reflecting a common issue. To validate this data, we conducted additional research using reliable sources, such as studies on urban safety and mobility. We also gathered user feedback during initial testing, comparing perceptions with collected data. We aimed to cross-check different sources (experience, research, and user input) to avoid bias and ensure greater reliability. In this way, we ensured that the information used in developing the project was relevant, consistent, and representative of reality.

Ethics

Ethics in the development of SafeRoute was considered from the beginning, with a focus on promoting safety in a responsible and accessible way for everyone. We prioritized user privacy by avoiding the collection of sensitive personal data and using only necessary information in an anonymized form. We also considered accessibility by designing a simple and inclusive interface. To reduce bias, we combined multiple data sources, including research and user contributions, avoiding decisions based on a single perspective. Additionally, the app was designed not to create fear, but to provide guidance responsibly. In this way, we aim to ensure a positive social impact while promoting safety without compromising individual rights.
